Hugh Ward and Jane Graham ..... the next generation B1873

Hugh Ward, age 27 years, Coal Miner - shows on the 1901 Census at 7 Castle Street, Hamilton as a Boarder. Born ca 1874.
Hugh Ward
Born circa 1873/4 – Died age 77 years on 1st August 1950 at 41 Bothwell Road, Hamilton. Cause of death – cardio vascular degeneration. Death registered by son Hugh Ward of 37 Tuphall Road, Hamilton.
Jane Graham
Born ca 1881 – Died age 70 years on 9th May 1951. Widow of Hugh Ward, Coal Hewer. Jane died at 07.30am at 37 Tuphall Road, Hamilton. Both father Robert Graham and mother Catherine Hunter deceased. Death certificate registered by Hugh Ward, son.

Marriage information :
Hugh Ward and Jane Graham were married on 9th November 1907 at 35 Hutchison Street, Glasgow in the District of Blythswood in the Burgh of Glasgow.
Hugh Ward – aged 32 years (born ca 1875) of 22 Burnside Lane, Hamilton. Son of Edward Ward, Labourer and Sarah McQuade (deceased). Occupation Coal Miner, Bachelor.
Jane Graham - aged 26 years (Born ca 1881) also of 22 Burnside Lane, Hamilton. Spinster. Daughter of Robert Graham, Railway Contractor and Catherine Hunter.

Hugh and Jane had four children( all born in Hamilton) :
Hugh Born circa 1909, Died (Single) on 24th August 1955 at Hairmyres Hospital. Usual residence listed as 37 Tuphall Road, Hamilton. Cause of death listed as Tuberculosis. Death registered by brother in law John Conway (of 12 Kenmare Terrace, Whitehill).

Edward Born circa 1913 .... Married to Elizabeth
Died 3rd October 1945 aged 32. Buried at Celle War Cemetery, Celle, Niedersachsen, Germany. Lance Corporal in WW2 – 2827951, 6th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders.

Catherine - Catherine Ward married Johnny Conway and they had 7 children :
Jane (also married a Conway from Motherwell, no relation to Johnny) – they had 2 sons, 1 daughter.

Alanna – Living in Ipswich, had no children


Graham – Born on 21st November 1919 at 65 Castle Street, Hamilton.
Died 26th October 1994, age 74 years
Married to Annie Currie – Annie was Born 22nd December 1920 and
Died 21st November 2001. Graham and Annie had 6 children – James, Hugh, Graham, Anna, Rose and Colin.

In 1884 Edward’s son James Ward marries in District of Hamilton County of Lanark . On 19th November 1884 at Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton.
James Ward, age 24 – 3 Postgate Hamilton. James Ward died in 1934 aged 73 years (647/00 0300)
Annie Fisher, age 21 – 2 Postgate, Hamilton – Daughter of Ambrose Fisher and Catherine McGarrigle. Anne Fisher died in 1934 aged 69 years. (647/00 0187)

In 1891 Edward’s son John Ward marries in District of Hamilton, County of Lanark . On 20th April 1891 at Free Church Manse, Union Street, Hamilton.
John Ward, age 20 – 20 Portland Square, Hamilton (Occupation Coal Miner)
Jane Cannon, age 18 – 20 Portland Square, Hamilton (Occupation Powerloom Winder). Daughter of John Cannon (French Polisher) and Jessie Cannon, ms Rankin.

In 1899 Edward’s son Henry Ward marries in District of Hamilton, County of Lanark . On 5th December 1899 at The Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton.
Henry Ward, age 21 – 109 Castle Street, Hamilton (Occupation Coal Miner)
Catherine Colquhoun, age 19 – 109 Castle Street, Hamilton (Occupation French Polisher). Daughter of John Colquhoun (Iron Planer) and Margaret Colquhoun, ms McEwan (deceased).

In 1907 Edward’s son Edward Ward marries in District of Hamilton, County of Lanark. On 1st February 1907 at The Roman Catholic Chapel, Cadzow.

Catherine Conway, age 18 – 4 Wilson Terrace, Cadzow (Spinster). Daughter of John Conway (Coal Miner, deceased) and Jean Conway, ms Smart.

Edward Ward and Sarah McQuade - next generation .... B1838

Edward Ward and Sarah McQuade were married on 5th February 1866 at Roman Catholic Chapel, Hamilton in the District of Hamilton in the County of Lanark. They had 3 children by this time.

Edward Ward – aged 28 years of 95 Castle Street, Hamilton. Son of Bernard Ward, Labourer and Agnes Mullen, both deceased in 1866. Occupation, Labourer in an ironwork (Bachelor)
Edward died in Stobhill Hospital, Glasgow on 29th January 1912 aged 76 years. Cause of death was Pulmonary Tuberculosis.
Sarah McQuade – aged 26 years of 95 Castle Street, Hamilton.
Daughter of John McQuade, Railway Labourer and Agnes Scullion. Born in Ireland.
Sarah died on 26th November 1905 at Combination Poorhouse, Hamilton. Usual residence is listed as 4 Landale Street, Cadzow in 1905. Sarah was 65 years old and cause of death is listed as Senile decay. Death registered by daughter Agnes Conn, 4 Landale Street, Cadzow.

1861 Sarah with parents at 33 Castle Street, sons Patrick McIroy (4) and James Ward 8 months old living here with Sarah.


In 1871 Edward and Sarah live at 76 Castle Street with Patrick, James, Mary, Edward and Agnes.

1881 they are living at 41 Castle Street, Hamilton (see below)

1891 they are living at 43 Church Street, Hamilton. (Sarah, Agnes, Hugh, Edward, Henry and Joseph).

By 1901 Sarah shows on the Census as an Inmate , aged 68 years, born in Ireland. Might be Hamilton workhouse census.

John was born in Hamilton and is shown as residing with the Ward family. This is Sarah’s youngest brother (see 1861 census).

The 1851 Census for Hamilton shows McQuade family living at 78 Castle Street.
John McQuade – Head – Age 30, Labourer – Born Ireland Down
Agnes McQuade – Wife – Age 30, Born Ireland Down
Sarah McQuade – Daughter, age 12 – Born Ireland, Down
Hugh McQuade – Son, age 5 – Born Ireland, Down
John McQuade – Son, age 3 months – Born Hamilton. There is another John listed on the 1861 census at 2 months old. Their first son probably died in infancy
We know that the McQuade’s moved from Ireland between Hugh being born in 1846 and John being born in 1851.

The 1861 Census for Hamilton shows McQuade family living at 33 Castle Street.

Ann McQuade – Wife, age 42, Born Ireland
Hugh McQuade – Son (Unmarried), age 15
Ann McQuade – Daughter age 8, born Hamilton
John McQuade – Son age 2 mn?
Sarah McQuade – Daughter, age 23 (Unmarried) Born Ireland
Patrick McIlroy – Grandson, age 4 born Hamilton

James Ward – Grandson, age 8 months, born Hamilton

On the same page of the 1861 Census above living at 29 Castle Street are Patrick Gormally, Margaret Gormally and Edward Ward (brother in law).
These are 2 of the children of Bernard and Agnes Ward.
Patrick is the husband of Margaret Ward. Patrick is age 40, born Ireland.
Margaret is age 33.
Edward is Unmarried and age 23 at the time.

They appear in the 1841 Census of Hamilton – at Back o’ Barnes
Bernard Ward - age 40 years – Labourer. Born Ireland 1801
Nancy (Agnes) Ward age 35 years – Born Ireland 1806
Their 4 children all born in Scotland:
Margaret age 13 (B1828)
James age 10 (B1831)
Mary age 7 (B1834)
Edward age 4 (B1837)


By 1851 Census – 94 Castle Street, Hamilton. Agnes. Aged 53 is showing as the Head of the house. Which means that Bernard probably deceased. Her occupation was Lodging Housekeeper.
Margaret – age 23. Labourer, Born Hamilton
Thomas – Son age ? 19. Occupation Collier. Born Hamilton
Edward – Son age 14. Scholar. Born Hamilton
John Mills, Visitor from England, occupation Peddler – also listed on the Census at this address. Death certificate for Margaret shows she died aged 38 years on 7th January 1866 in Castle Street. Widow of Patrick Gormally, Labourer. Cause of death listed as Chronic diarrhoea. Death registered by brother Edward.

Where it all began....

The Ward family history begins in Hamilton Lanarkshire in 1826 with the Marriage of Bernard Ward and Agnes Mullen on 26th November 1826. Found their Proclamation of Marriage. Both were born in Ireland. Location unknown.
Their four children are all born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, the first, Margaret was born in 1828.

This blog has been created in the search for my husband Colin Ward's family history of the Ward family.
Hopefully we can trace the Ward's back to Irish origin.
It's looking very promising so far.....
